Adrian House residents walk the wall

With 1,200 miles down and only 12,000 to go, the walking group at Adrian House is well on its way to walking the length of the Great Wall of China.

"We started by doing research on the Great Wall and creating a poster to mark our progress," says facility activity coordinator Lois Best. Best and her colleagues at PCLA are always looking for new ways to inspire their clients to get active and set goals for themselves.

The group began in the fall of 2012 and now meets twice weekly with most of the 10 residents participating. "We use an App to track our miles and find local routes that cover one and two mile options," says Best. Some of the residents have even been motivated to walk on their own as well as join the group.

"Goal setting is an important part of what I help the residents to do and walking the length of the Great Wall of China is certainly a great goal to work towards," says Best. She says that the group helps residents work on their socialization and get in shape. "I also encourage them to really take notice of their surroundings when we are out." The top walkers who log the most miles get rewarded with a group dinner of their choice.

PCLA activity coordinators are key to a resident's success. They plan monthly activities, special events and help residents find volunteer or paying work. The coordinators engage the residents in the community which essential to their well being and a cornerstone of PCLA's mandate.
